Appliance repair in Cherry Hills Village, kitchen and laundry

The other chapters follow one refrigerator through the year. This one covers the rest of the house: dishwashers, washers, dryers, ranges, ovens, hoods and refrigerators of any make. Sub-Zero Repair Cherry Hills repairs them on the same $89 visit, and the method does not change. First the upkeep the maker asks of you; then, when that is done and the fault is still there, the repair.

Your share first, ours after

Every appliance manual hands its owner a few small jobs, and they are worth doing before anyone is called: now and then the fault turns out to be nothing more than a screen or filter left too long. Below is that list for each kind of appliance, in the maker’s own terms, followed by the signs that the job has outgrown it.

Dishwasher

Clean the filters, and how often depends on the badge. Viking asks for it at least weekly on its 3 and 5 Series. Whirlpool and Maytag say monthly, or every two weeks in a busy household. GE puts its Fine and Ultra Fine Filters on an every-other-month rinse. Thermador’s three-part filter wants 3 to 6 cleanings a year in ordinary use and 8 to 12 under heavy use, and a Miele simply says “Check filters” after 50 programs.

Call us when: Water standing in the tub over a filter you have just cleaned, a door or base that leaks, dishes that come out cold and wet.

Washer

An empty cleaning cycle about once a month. Whirlpool and Maytag call it Clean Washer and want it monthly or every 30 cycles; LG asks for Tub Clean every 30 uses or when tcL appears; Samsung shows a Self Clean reminder after 20 washes on a top-loader and 40 on a front-loader. A Samsung front-loader also has a pump filter to clear monthly, an hour after any hot wash.

Call us when: A drum that will not drain with that filter clear, a spin that never starts, a roar at full speed, or a leak at the door after the seal has been cleaned.

Dryer

Lint off the screen after every load, and a nylon brush through the screen every six months, as Whirlpool describes. The duct outside matters more: Samsung wants it cleaned once or twice a year whether or not drying has slowed, and Electrolux wants the whole exhaust run inspected at least every 18 months. Neither allows plastic or foil duct. Softener sheets can film the moisture bars, which Frigidaire says to wipe with rubbing alcohol.

Call us when: A drum that tumbles cool with the vent clear, a drum that will not turn, or a squeal or thump that was not there last month.

Refrigerators of other makes

A water filter every six months for Whirlpool, KitchenAid and LG, or sooner when the indicator lights. Condenser care varies: KitchenAid says its built-ins rarely need it and suggests every 6 months only in dusty homes or with pets; Viking’s integrated units display CHECK COND. every six months; Monogram’s built-in side-by-side manual asks for a yearly cleaning where the air is dusty or greasy.

Call us when: A section warming up, frost on the back wall, water under the drawers. The signs read the same on any make; the Sub-Zero version is on the refrigerator repair page. · Refrigerator repair

Range, oven and hood

Hood filters on the maker’s schedule: every 3 to 6 months on a Wolf pro hood, which must never run without them; when the FILTER button lights after 40 hours on a Thermador Professional hood; monthly on a Viking, sooner with frying or wok cooking. A Thermador igniter takes a cotton swab and soapy water, never a sharp tool. The door gasket of a Wolf M Series oven is left alone, because rubbing it can spoil the seal. And no foil on the floor of a gas oven: the CPSC warns it blocks combustion air and can produce carbon monoxide.

Call us when: A burner that clicks and will not light with its cap properly seated, an oven that misses its temperature, a door gasket that has torn.

Dust-coated condenser coil beside its fan, a vacuum brush at the bottom of the frame.
A coil furred with grey dust beside its fan guard. Any refrigerator cooled by a fan and an open coil collects the same coat, whatever name is on the door.

The cotton reaches more than one coil

This site plans the Sub-Zero year around June, when the cottonwoods along the canal let go of their seed. The fluff does not choose a brand. A second refrigerator in the garage or the basement bar draws the same air across its condenser, and the flap where the dryer exhausts outdoors is worth a glance once the cotton month is over. Neither check needs a technician; both are cheaper than the faults they head off.

When the list has been done

Then the machine has a fault, and the visit finds it. We test rather than guess: the drain pump and its hose on a dishwasher or washer that holds water, the element, thermal fuse and moisture sensing on a dryer that runs cool, the igniter and its spark on a burner that will not catch, the fans and the defrost parts on a refrigerator that warms. You hear the cause and the price, and you decide.

The visit and the bill

Each visit is $89 with the diagnosis included; when you approve the repair, that $89 is credited against the bill. The fee is the same for a washer as for a wall oven. This site prints price ranges for Sub-Zero parts only; for other machines the parts differ too much from model to model to publish a fair range, so the figure comes after the diagnosis and before any work. When a part has to be ordered, we come back to fit it, and the visit you have already paid still counts toward that repair. Someone answers the phone at any hour; a technician can come any day from eight in the morning to eight in the evening.

Before you call

Which makes do you work on?

Most household makes. Among them: Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, GE, Monogram, LG, Samsung, Bosch, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Miele, Thermador, Viking and Wolf among them, along with Sub-Zero itself. If the make is not in that list, ask on the phone.

My dryer needs two cycles. Is that a repair?

Usually not at first. Clear the screen, then look at the duct where it leaves the house: a long run, several elbows or a crushed section slows drying on any brand, and Samsung counts every 90-degree turn as 6 feet off the length a vent may have. If the duct is clear and the drum still tumbles cool, the heat side has a fault and that is our job.

What should I have ready when I call?

Three things help most. The brand, plus the model and serial printed on the label inside the door or on the frame, when it can be read without moving the machine. Any code or message showing, copied exactly. And a plain account of what the appliance does, or stopped doing. With those, the technician can bring the likely parts on the first trip.
