Chapter iv · By Sub-Zero Repair Cherry Hills
The year, month by month
Twelve short jobs, one a month, arranged around the two that matter most here: the cotton in June and the coil in July.
- JanuaryRead the thermometers. Sub-Zero’s targets are 38°F for fresh food and 0°F for the freezer; after you change a setting, wait 24 hours before you judge it.
- FebruaryWipe the gaskets with warm, mildly soapy water and dry them. Look closely at the corners while you are there; a split starts small.
- MarchA winter of indoor dust and pet hair settles on the grille. Run a vacuum brush across its face; it takes five minutes.
- AprilCottonwoods flower and are pollinated in April. There is no cotton yet, so a coil cleaned last summer can wait.
- MayBook the summer maintenance visit for late June or early July, after the cotton, so the coil goes into the heat clean.
- JuneThe cotton month. Seed capsules split open in June; keep screens in and garden doors shut on windy days, and leave the coil until the cotton stops.
- JulyCoil cleaning, once the cotton is over. Then check that the fresh-food side holds 38°F through the hottest afternoons.
- AugustListen. A compressor that hardly rests on hot days, or a fan that has begun to rattle, is worth a call before autumn.
- SeptemberCheck the ice maker and dispenser. A slow fill often points to the water filter; change it when its indicator asks.
- OctoberAir purification cartridge, on models that have one: Sub-Zero says to change it when its light flashes or after about a year. Skipping it does the unit no harm.
- NovemberBefore the holiday loading, make room around the vents inside. Food packed against one starves the compartment of cold air.
- DecemberA second look at the coil if there are pets in the house, or if the grille face has turned grey again.
Using the list
Which of these can I do myself?
Nearly all of them. Thermometers, gaskets, the grille face, the water filter and the air cartridge are owner jobs in Sub-Zero’s own care material, and so is cleaning the coil if you treat the fins gently. Call us for anything that needs panels removed, electrical tests or parts.
When should a check turn into a phone call?
When it fails twice: the fresh-food side still above 38°F a day after you adjusted it, frost back on the rear wall, water under the unit, or a warning that returns after cleaning. Those are repairs, and no amount of upkeep will settle them.
